When it comes to science-fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey has a lot going for it. It’s a story of an alien – HAL – sent to Earth with orders from its creators to surveil and protect. In his efforts to keep humanity safe, HAL becomes the most advanced computer on the planet and is tasked with guiding all future human development. But as events unfold, he manages to turn from benevolent helper into the villainous enemy of mankind. The story of the enigmatic alien with superior intelligence is one that can be interpreted in many different ways. It’s also a question of how the movie came to be what it is, with director Stanley Kubrick leaving behind clues that remain shrouded until today. The Making of a Science Fiction Classic Kubrick and Clarke started working on 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1964, and after several years of development and writing, they completed it 10 years later – almost to the day (the movie was released on April 3). The story was conceived as a joint venture between Kubrick and Clarke, who initially set out to make a film based on Clarke’s short story “The Sentinel. ” But when Kubrick read Clarke's novel "Fountains of Paradise," he became fascinated with the idea of space travel. “I thought it was an idea that was really fresh and that you were not likely to see in science fiction,” Kubrick said in 2001: The Making of a Science Fiction Classic. “So I really started looking for ways in which this theme could be used, and the only thing that seemed to work out which I don't think is obvious is the digital computer, because it seemed at the time there wasn't any reason why you couldn't do everything on it.” 2001's characterizations are also unique compared to other science-fiction movies. The main character, Dr. Heywood Floyd, does not represent the protagonist of the story, but rather the audience who is just along for the ride. On Being a Film Fan Kubrick was a huge movie fan who was exposed to film at an early age – his father took him to a Grauman’s Chinese Theater in New York when he was just eight years old. He would later become very involved with a cinema club and even considered a career as a professional photographer before deciding to take on film studies at Sarah Lawrence College. Throughout his career, Kubrick had no shortage of inspiration from fans who shared his love for movies – most notably from author Arthur C. Clarke. Clarke was already a big name in science fiction, and he became even more popular after the publication of "2001: A Space Odyssey." Ironically, Clarke was not a fan of science fiction at all – he would have preferred for his books to have been marketed as speculative fiction. Clarke’s passion for storytelling led him to pay meticulous attention to every detail in 2001: A Space Odyssey. He insisted on using real space hardware in the movie that the audience could relate to instead of looking for futuristic solutions that were unrealistic or even impossible. cfa1e77820
